Elisa Luu (Elisabetta Luciani) is a Rome based composer.

Elisa Luu, “Marz”
From the EP, The Time of Waiting
This track is amazing. It’s a miniature epic that moves from sparse acoustic ambiance into a more beat-orientated, electronic finale. Ms. Luu covers a lot of sonic territory in just over four minutes, and each second is composed and arranged to perfection.

It’s summer time, the county fair is on, and your nine-year-old hands grasp an aromatic serving of cotton candy. The line for the Zipper ride is short. It feels like freedom, marvelling at all the smells and blurred human forms. This warm and distant place is evoked by “r735”, which opens The Time of Waiting with the chatter of children, mechanical wheels, and tracks, whirring beneath the twinkles of a backward acoustic guitar. Wahed vocal tones make the track as memorable as the images it invokes. The honey-baked vocal-esque tones warm the chest like hot cider.

Italian composer Elisa Luu may have a background in saxophone and jazz recitals, but their influence is undetectable on this EP. She has opted here for a more ambient circus sound, one she has much improved upon since her incongruent full length Chromatic Sigh. On that release, there seemed to be too much space for her to fill, and she often seemed like a child wearing her father’s pants. Luu’s talents are more appropriately reduced into lovely little slabs of “dream-bience”.
The bubbly and twinkly nature of The Time of Waiting doesn’t wear out its welcome. On the juicy hand-clap piece “Marz”, hammered dulcimer is sent through an echo tunnel while harmonic tones are plucked. Electro percussion sends things into early Boards of Canada territory, grounded with a more straight-laced voice. And on “13 Maggio”, a string orchestra rises out of the murk and carries the playful chimes and sparse electronic squibbles toward the EP’s grandest moment. Soil-encrusted guitars bend into dance positions while Luu fires synthesized photons into the vaulted ceiling. This is far beyond the missteps of past efforts: paced wonderfully, executed with confidence.
The EP contains a nice blend of organic instruments and the ever-indiscernable-source electronics. Electric guitars drone in straight lines, but at times create melancholy moments of dissonance through squealing and contortion. A piano finds its way to the final track, “Piano 5-1”, along with synth tones that mimic french horns. It would be interesting to hear Elisa Luu dust off the old saxophone and incorporate it into these pieces, as her growth as an electronic musician is apparent.
The anguished guitars of the final moments leave a strangely sour taste with the mind, akin to one’s parents giving the five minute warning before the carnival closes as an unwanted bedtime fast approaches. It’s a strange let down to an otherwise lovely effort. At 22 minutes, any attempt at depth is quickly dispelled, the fault of the time constraint, rather than that of the artist. This is a more than decent work from a burgeoning composer who started her own net label to offer it for free.

La bèl Netlabel (good name for a label!) is a new Italian based netlabel born in March 2010. They focus on experimental, noisy, relaxing ambient and natural crafted new age jazz.
Here are the two latest releases; Elisa Luu and Ballpen.
Check also out Di Bos, Menion, and Didondo.
Elisa Luu is a Rome based composer, and has been involved with several music projects over the years, including fusion quartet Prodotti Speciali, Short’s Monday Night Jazz Orchestra and as a participant at Berklee Jazz clinics.
Originally started as a saxophone player, and moving to fusion and jazz. Elisa decided in 2007 to move over to an electric basic genre.
In 2008, she released her first EP through UK based label Phantom Channel and her last release is ‘The Time of Waiting” released on July 14, 2010.
Ballpen is a solo-project of Alessandro Coronas,Sardinian musician and composer. The music of “The dreams trilogy” is based on how his dreams have been working throughout the years…strange and funny combinations of the puzzle-pieces of his life.
If you listen at a reasonable low volume you can still hear the music and what’s going on in the room next to yours at the same time.

8/10 (Mirco Salvadori)

Elisa Luu is from Rome and is described as a jazz artist. However her online album The Time of Waiting from the La Bel Netlabel is more in the new age ambient category. The music has a droning quality that veers between the organic and the electronic. It is a peaceful yet restless sound that works well in those evenings after a stressful day. Elisa Huu is another one of those talented artists you will not find in the limited commercial music venues.

this ep came out about a month ago, and i read of it, while i was at an shitty internet place, when my old notebook was dead, and my new one was not yet around..and it felt pretty bad, to know that elisa luu has a new release out, and i was not able to listen to it. so, a few days had to pass, and when i had my new notebook, this ep was one of the first things that i downloaded on my new notebook.
it was released on the la bèl netlabel, a pretty young but good label, based in roma, italy. i found it by accident, like i mostly find things, in april, and i totally liked its very first release, the gus goll love/capatùly by di bos, which i posted here..
i became a big fan of elisa luu’s music, about a year ago, when i first listenend to her floating sounds ep, which came out in august 2008, as the second release of the great phantom channel label..
the 5 tracks on this ep are again totally beautiful..and funny, how the title worked for me then, in a way, because i was really waiting hard to listen to this ep..and for my new notebook.
enjoy, and here is elisa luu’s myspace page, by the way..

..Kui room(a)lanna Elisabetta Luciani alustas oma muusikalist karjääri “Floating Sounds” EP-ga (plaadifirma Phantom Channel) 2008. aastal, siis võis kohe aimu saada, et esile on kerkimas suur self-made-womansooloartist, kes afektiivset külge ja innovatiivset tehnilist pagast originaalselt segades-rakendades suudab vastassugupoolega sammu käia või neist isegi ees olla, mida – poliitilist korrektsust kõrvale heites – ei juhtu kuigi sageli (meenuvad ainult Jessica Bailiff, Maja Ratkje ja Hanne Adam akaadamned.age). (Loomulikult on ka olemas uusi suundi demonstreerivaid naiskollektiive – nt Anahita, Knitted Abyss ja Pocahaunted). “Floating Sounds” EP kasvas aasta hiljem üle albumiks “Chromatic Sigh” (plaadifirma The Hidden Shoal), mis vähemalt üheswebzine`s valiti 2009. aasta 100 parima albumi sekka. In Vegas remiksiks Spiritualized`i?

..The variety on Elisa Luu‘s recent release,The Time of Waiting, from the netlabel known playfully as La Bèl (labelnetlabel.com), is enough to suggest less an album than a reel — less a collection of interrelated music than a set whose lack of self-evident correlation serves the primary purpose of expressing the wide range of which Luu is capable. And to that end, it more than succeeds. There are playful beats, distorted as if through a watery mirror. There is quasi-orchestral extravagance, shot through with a theremin-like lead. But if one track must be selected, the keeper is the set’s opener, “r735,” which has four distinct elements that balance each other perfectly.
..There is the opening vocal of children playing (sharing a theme from the album’s cover photograph), and the percolating guitar they’re set against; there is the mood-setting synthesizer. And then there is the synthesizer-like material that in time reveals itself as cleverly transformed vocals, vowels stretched until they bead, and that in turn provide a common ground between all the other components.Vocals remain a conflicted subject and source in electronic music, and the way in which Luu treats them for “r735″ is exemplary — the field recording recognizes them as merely one part of the aural landscape, while the digitally manipulated ones are adopted as source material, useful for their texture and intrinsic sonic qualities.
